2022’s Largest Coworking Operators
The growing popularity of coworking — thanks to the increasing need for flexibility and professional workspaces — means that the industry has more to offer than ever in terms of variety. In particular, freelancers, teams, and small businesses stand to benefit from the expansion of coworking as more companies join the fray and attempt to cater to each remote worker or organization’s needs.
So, in order to better identify the largest players behind this expansion, our sister site, CoworkingCafe, ranked the largest coworking operators in the U.S. by number of locations.
Regus Leads the Way with 800+ U.S. Locations, Other IWG Brands Follow Suit
The study found that the largest U.S. coworking brand in 2022 was Regus with 832 locations across the U.S. In fact, this impressive number was more than three times the number of the runner-up. While the Northeast is the area of strongest focus for Regus (with the tri-state area being home to more than 100 locations alone), Regus coworking spaces can be found in all of the U.S., except for the Pacific Northwest and the Bay Area. The study also noted the Luxembourg-based operator’s experience with running shared and flexible office spaces at an international level, starting out in the 1980s and now boasting around 3,000 locations globally.
Notably, Regus is one of several coworking brands owned by IWG. Another IWG brand that made the list was Spaces with 117 locations in the U.S. and 466 worldwide. The largest concentrations of Spaces-operated coworking offices can be found in southern California, the Bay Area, Texas and New York City. Similarly, HQ Global Workplaces — another IWG subsidiary — made the list at #8, boasting 60 U.S. offices and a further 19 reportedly in the works for the near future. Altogether, IWG brands accounted for almost one-fifth of the entire U.S. coworking market in number of locations.
WeWork & Industrious Trail Regus as Coworking Operators with 2nd– and 3rd-Most U.S. Locations
With 246 locations nationally, WeWork was the second-largest coworking firm in the U.S., making up almost one-third of its international catalog that encompasses 700 offices. Currently, WeWork is undergoing consolidation attempts as the company is dropping several less-profitable locations from its roster.
Meanwhile, in the third spot, Industrious Office boasted 135 coworking locations across 40 cities in the U.S. — a little more than half as many as WeWork. In similar fashion to the other podium finishers, Industrious also has a strong international presence in addition to its U.S. portfolio. And, while WeWork’s markets of focus include New York City (with Manhattan, in particular), as well as the West Coast, Industrious almost entirely relies on its East Coast network of coworking locations centered around metros like NYC, Boston and Atlanta.
Premier Workspaces, Office Evolution & Workstyle Flexible Spaces Among Domestic Coworking Firms with Largest U.S. Presences
While the first four positions on the list were occupied by global coworking operators, the next three were all taken up by companies with exclusively U.S.-based operations.
The first of these was Irvine, Calif.-based Premier Workspaces, an operator primarily looking to attract larger businesses and boasting 87 locations in 2022. Focusing on taking over distressed office assets and converting them into professional coworking offices, Premier’s main market is the Los Angeles metro, with some additional locations on the East Coast and in the Midwest.
Next up, Office Evolution made it to #6 with 81 locations. In this case, the focus is on Colorado — which is the company’s home state — as well as California and New Jersey, among other states. Not far behind was Workstyle Flexible Spaces, a Houston-based operator with 67 locations nationally, 41 of which were located in Texas with 27 in their hometown alone.
Other domestic operators that made the list included Intelligent Office at #9 with 45 locations and Expansive Workspace at #10 with 43.
