Industrious & Ingka Centres Team Up to Bring Coworking Concept Hej! Workshop to San Francisco
Industrious — a leading provider of flexible workspace solutions — has joined forces with Ingka Centres to open Hej! Workshop, a 46,000-square-foot coworking concept within the revitalized Meeting Place at 945 Market St. in downtown San Francisco.
Hej! Workshop joins the newly reimagined six-story retail hub, which encompasses a total area of 250,000 square feet. Ingka Centres, a subsidiary of IKEA, acquired the property in 2020 for a significant $198 million.
In August, the mall’s flagship tenant — a sprawling, 52,000-square-foot IKEA store (the first in San Francisco) — opened its doors, occupying the first three floors. Hej! Workshop occupies the top level.
Hej! Workshop was first introduced at Ingka Centres’ Meeting Place in Stockholm in 2022. A distinctive coworking model, it embraces the Swedish values of affordability, sustainability and holistic well-being.
Hej! Workshop with Industrious has been developed in accordance with LEED certification standards and is powered by renewable energy, demonstrating the partnership’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Additionally, abundant natural light and greenery enhance the interior design. IKEA for Business contributed to the interior design of the space.
With a focus on fostering a vibrant, community-oriented environment, the coworking space offers members a lounge area, a café, and a wellness room alongside flexible meeting spaces and private workstations that can be reserved. Plus, in the coming months, a multi-level food hall called Saluhall is slated to open its doors, further enhancing the Meeting Place’s appeal as a dynamic hub for work, dining and socializing.
Industrious will manage and integrate Hej! Workshop into its global workplace platform, which encompasses more than 200 locations in 65 markets. Hej! Workshop is the company’s seventh Bay Area location.
“We are thrilled to partner with Ingka Centres to bring a new flexible office concept to San Francisco,” said Jamie Hodari, CEO and co-Founder at Industrious. “The way we work is changing and our expectations of the workplace need to change with it. What sets Hej!Workshop apart is its remarkable optimism and the effort put into reimagining the office as a destination, where professionals can be inspired, productive and connect with their colleagues, without leaving behind the comforts of home.”
As hybrid work arrangements become increasingly prevalent, traditional commercial districts — including San Francisco’s downtown — have faced challenges in achieving pre-pandemic occupancy levels. That said, Hej! Workshop with Industrious presents a refreshing perspective by combining the best of both worlds — the flexibility and comfort of working from home with the amenities and hospitality of a traditional workplace — to create an attractive destination for professionals seeking both productivity and well-being.
