The Fritsch-Zartman Building, located at 119 Petaluma Boulevard North, has undergone several transformations throughout its history. Originally constructed as a blacksmith and wagon-making shop in 1852, it was later remodeled in the Italianate architectural style, with a second story and ornate iron front face. Over the years, it housed various businesses such as dry goods stores, a stationary store, a women’s clothing shop, and J.C. Penney’s Department Store. In 2006, the building’s owners, with the help of a historic restoration program, removed a slipcover that had been added by J.C. Penney in the 1950s. This restoration project brought back the original beauty of the building, with its rich architectural details once again shining through. Today, the building is occupied by Sienna Antiques.
The revitalization efforts in Downtown Petaluma have solidified its reputation as a vibrant destination, renowned for its lively nightlife and thriving shopping district. To preserve the city’s historical legacy and maintain the charm of the downtown area, Petaluma adopted architectural design guidelines in 1999. Today, Petaluma’s main street stands as a testament to its illustrious past, harmonizing historical significance with modern allure. The trendy and vibrant atmosphere, fostered by the successful revival efforts of previous decades, continues to draw in visitors and residents, perpetuating the city’s enduring legacy.
