Located near metropolitan Indianapolis, 18 miles southeast of the central business district, Shelbyville, Indiana is home to 19,000 residents. The city, which is the seat of Shelby County, developed in the mid-1800s after it was connected to Indianapolis by rail. Since then the community has grown and has almost 1,000 businesses that employ a workforce of over 14,500 laborers. The service industries, like hotels and lodging, health and education, use the most significant share of Shelbyville’s workforce followed closely by the retail sector. As of 2015, the 7,700 households had an average income of $49,815 and are forecasted to grow to $56,800 by 2020. Shelbyville is located along Interstate 74, which crosses the Midwest from Cincinnati, Ohio to Davenport, Iowa; Interstate 74 also connects the city to Indianapolis. The metro area is also intersected by Interstates 65, 69, and 70. Shelbyville is 40 miles east of the Indianapolis International Airport which provides non-stop service to over 41 destinations globally and is the second-largest hub for FedEx. From downtown Indianapolis, rail service is provided on Amtrak’s Cardinal line which connects the region to Chicago and New York. Shelby County is home to two gaming facilities: Hoosier Park, a casino and racing track, and a horse track called Indiana Grand Race Course. While the area already benefits from the jobs and tourism investment that these facilities provide, the city is also allocating a portion of the tax revenue from those entities to an economic development fund. With this funding, Shelbyville has been able to invest in infrastructure upgrades and business attraction programs. This includes work to attract high-tech industries to Intelliplex Business Park to add to the existing industrial base that includes Knauf Insulation and several auto parts makers. This fund allows the community to remain competitive with other cities of its size and diversify its economy. Downtown Shelbyville is on the historic Public Square located at the intersection of Washington and Harrison Streets. The area near the square is home to locally owned shops and restaurants; including a music store, coffee shop, book store, bakery, and the Grover Museum. The east side of the city, along County Road 44, has more national retailers like Kroger, Walmart, and a movie theater. This corridor is located next to Interstate 74.
