Burlington is a city in Alamance and Guilford counties in the state of North Carolina in the U.S. It is the principal city of the Burlington, NC, Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Alamance County, where most of the town is located. This close group of cities lies in the Piedmont geographical region of the United States and forms the basis of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point, NC Combined Statistical Area. As of 2012, the Piedmont Triad has an estimated population of 1,611,243, making it the 33rd largest combined statistical area in the United States. The metropolitan area is connected by Interstates 40, 85, 73, and 74 and is served by the Piedmont Triad International Airport. Long known as one of the primary manufacturing and transportation hubs of the southeastern United States, the Triad is also an important educational, healthcare, and cultural region and occupies a prominent place in the history of the American Civil Rights Movement. The Research Triangle, or simply The Triangle, is a common nickname for a metropolitan area in the Piedmont region of the U.S. state of North Carolina. Anchored by the cities of Raleigh and Durham and the town of Chapel Hill, the region is home to three major research universities: North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, respectively. Most of the Triangle is part of North Carolina's first, second, fourth, ninth, and thirteenth congressional districts. The region is sometimes confused with the Piedmont Triad, a North Carolina region adjacent to and directly west of the Triangle comprising Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point, among other cities..
