In 1847, the Venerable Samuel Mazzuchelli, an Italian immigrant Dominican priest serving the upper Midwest territories, invited a handful of women to form community and serve as educators in the southwest corner of Wisconsin. This new community of Dominican Sisters, grew in number and places of ministry, eventually having national and international reach in their preaching and teaching of the Gospel. The 800 acres of land purchased by Father Mazzuchelli in 1844 became home for the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa and their St. Clara Academy for women. Today, 450 acres remain in the Sisters’ care and the motherhouse campus where they have lived is known as Sinsinawa Mound .
