Year-over-year, new orders slightly increased for all manufacturing industries (by an average 0.1 percent) as of December 2019, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The most considerable increase came from the Furniture and Related Products sector, up by 9.6 percent compared to December 2018. New orders also improved for Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components (up by 6.6 percent) and the Nondurable Goods industries (up by 4.2 percent).

New orders declined significantly for Transportation Equipment on a year-over-year basis (down by 9.8 percent, the largest decrease as of December), followed by Primary Metals with a 7.8 percent drop. Orders for Durable Goods decreased by 3.6 percent, followed by Computers and Electronic Products (down by 2.1 percent).

On a month-over-month basis, new orders increased by an average 4.3 percent for all manufacturing industries, or by $2.3 million. Computers and Electronic Products recorded the most notable surge (up by 25.7 percent), followed by Transportation Equipment (up by 15.3 percent) and Machinery, with an 8.2 percent rise. Orders decreased by 6.6 percent for Furniture and Related Products, followed by Primary Metals (down by 4.3 percent) and Fabricated Metal Products (down by 1.9 percent).

The most significant drop came from the Transportation Equipment sector, down 13.2 percent since November 2018. New orders also declined for Primary Metals (down 8.6 percent), the Durable Goods industries (down 6 percent) and the Machinery sector (down 3.2 percent).

New orders increased for only three industries: Furniture and Related Products (up 8.4 percent, the largest uptick year-over-year through November), Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components (up 3.3 percent) and Nondurable Goods industries (up 0.2 percent).

On a month-over-month basis, orders inched down by an average 6.9 percent for all manufacturing industries, or by $35 million. Machinery registered the most considerable decrease in new orders (down 11.5 percent), followed by Transportation Equipment (down 10.3 percent) and the Durable Goods industries, with an 8.8 percent drop.
