Real estate investment advisory firm ING Clarion has tapped managing director David Gilbert as chief investment officer. Gilbert will head both the acquisitions and investment research departments along with sitting on the firm’s executive board and investment committee. He will be based out of the New York office.

A 28-year veteran of the real estate industry, Gilbert has worked as a portfolio manager with ING since 2007. He came to the firm from JP Morgan Chase, where he spent a decade. He has also headed the real estate department at the California Public Employees Retirement System, where he directed a restructuring of the group’s $6 billion portfolio.

According to ING chairman and chief executive officer Stephen Furnary, Gilbert’s experience and industry knowledge made him the right candidate for the position. When Gilbert joined ING in 2007, Furnary expressed his enthusiasm for his global perspective.

Gilbert received his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts and his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania.
