WellStar Prescribes Growth for Metro Atlanta

WellStar Health System recently purchased five hospitals from Texas-based Tenet Healthcare for a total of $575 million.

After gaining approval from its Board of Trustees, WellStar Health System will take ownership of r five metropolitan Atlanta hospitals from Tenet. The move adds to WellStar’s footprint in Georgia, where its facilities serve an estimated 1.4 million residents.

As part of the acquisition, WellStar will assume $86 million in debt related to the lease of North Fulton Hospital. The deal is subject to review of the Federal Trade Commission.

WellStar’s acquisition adds 1,192 licensed hospital beds supported by some 4,300 team members and 1,390 physicians and advanced practice professionals. North Fulton Hospital, Spalding Regional Hospital, Sylvan Grove Hospital, Atlanta Medical Center and the center’s South Campus have been added to WellStar’s network and will turn into not-for-profit entities.

The deal comes on the heels of West Georgia Health’s decision to join WellStar in November. The not-for-profit operates the 276-bed West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange. WellStar’s move requires several approvals, including that of Georgia’s Attorney General.

As a result, WellStar’s portfolio is currently made up of 20,000 team members across 11 campuses, some 200 medical office locations, and a large number of outpatient facilities.
