Biewer Lumber Opens $85M Sawmill in Southern US
Roughly 125 workers will be employed at the new facility in Newton, Miss. Biewer Lumber currently operates four sawmills in the Midwest as well as three lumber/distribution centers.

Biewer Lumber’s new plant site in Newton, Miss.
Michigan-based Biewer Lumber recently opened its first sawmill in Newton County, after an $85 million investment. With this expansion into the South, Biewer Sawmill-Newton LLC will employ 125 people.
Located at Highway 15 North, the plant is within 1 mile of Interstate 20, 3 miles of James H. Easom Field and adjacent to the Kansas City Southern Railroad. The fully automated facility is within the 311-acre Newton Industrial Park, owned by the City of Newton. The Mississippi Development Authority provided assistance in support of the project for site preparation and rail and road improvements. Work at the new facility broke ground in the second quarter of 2016.
“Mississippi offers numerous advantages to agribusiness companies, including 19.7 million acres of forestland. The state’s abundant timber resources allow Biewer Lumber to compete successfully in today’s global economy,” said MDA Executive Director Glenn McCullough, in a prepared statement.
Biewer Lumber also operates lumber treating/distribution centers at Lansing, Mich., Seneca, Ill., and Prentice, Wisc. The mills have the capacity to produce more than 300 million board feet of dimensional lumber and timber annually.
