Amazon is expanding its Austin Tech Hub, where it plans to create 800 new tech jobs including software and hardware engineering, research science and cloud computing. Austin Tech Hub is one of the company’s 17 North American Tech Hubs—a network of development centers in addition to the Seattle and Northern Virginia headquarters.

To make room for the additional jobs in Texas’ capital, the company will expand into a new 145,000-square-foot office in The Domain, slated to open in 2020. Specifically, the new office will be located in Domain 10, a 15-story 299,673-square-foot development located at 11815 Alterra Parkway. The LEED Silver-seeking project is owned by TIER REIT, which is co-developing the property with Endeavor Real Estate Group.

Growing Texas

Amazon has invested more than $7 billion in Texas since 2011, from building customer fulfillment facilities, cloud infrastructure and a 253-megawatt wind farm. Moreover, the company estimated that these direct investments contributed more than $5 billion to the state’s economy between 2011 and 2017 and generated an additional 30,000 indirect jobs on top of the company’s direct hires. More than 130,000 authors, developers and small and medium-sized businesses in Texas are growing their businesses with Amazon, according to a company statement.

The firm’s Austin-based teams focus on Amazon Web Services, Amazon Business, Amazon devices, video games design, advertising and more. “In the last four years, we have created more than 1,000 jobs in Austin,” Terry Leeper, general manager of Amazon’s Austin Tech Hub, said in prepared remarks.

“Amazon’s decision to further expand comes with the recognition that Texas continues to boast a pro-business environment that helps businesses and families to grow, thrive, and succeed,” added Congressman Michael McCaul. “This expansion will help ensure Austin remains at the cutting-edge of the tech that’s fueling and driving emerging markets.”
