World’s Largest Single-Site Solar Power Plant Begins Operations
Completed within less than two years, the solar project has a generating capacity of 1,177 megawatts, produced by 3.2 million solar panels.

Japan’s Marubeni Corp. has announced the start of commercial operation of the Sweihan photovoltaic independent power project in the United Arab Emirates. The 1,177-megawatt facility, also known as Noor Abu Dhabi, is currently the largest single-site solar power plant in the world.
Marubeni Corp. (20 percent), JinkoSolar Holding Co. (20 percent) and Abu Dhabi Power Corp. (60 percent) co-own the $870 million project. The loan agreement for the facility was signed in May 2017 and was co-financed by eight commercial banks, including Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ—currently renamed MUFG Bank—the Norinchukin Bank and Banking Corp. as well as Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp.
The solar project consists of 3.2 million solar panels, was completed within 23 months, as originally planned, and is part of UAE’s Energy Plan 2050. The electricity generated by the Noor Abu Dhabi solar farm has been acquired by the Emirates Water and Electricity Co. under a 25-year power purchase agreement.
