Construction Begins on UChicago Wellness Center
The project includes ground-floor renovations at the campus' historic Lying-In Hospital and the addition of a single-story glass structure.
Wight & Co. has begun construction on the Student Wellness Center, a $12 million, 30,000-square-foot project at the University of Chicago. The facility, once open in fall 2020, will create a single facility for the university’s student health, counseling and wellness resources. The company partnered with GMA Construction for construction management services.
Located on the university’s Hyde Park campus at the corner of 59th Street and Maryland Avenue, the center will occupy part of the ground floor of the historic Lying-In Hospital—a building designed by Schmidt, Garden & Erickson in the late 1920s—which houses the school’s student health clinic. The project will also include a glass structure in an existing courtyard, which will accommodate student counseling and health promotion services.
In May, Wight & Co. completed a 37,000-square-foot development some 40 miles southwest of Chicago. The Plainfield, Ill. development is the first recreation center built to achieve PHIUS+ Source Zero certification.
