Goodman Group has started construction on LAX01 Vernon, a 49.5 megawatt data center project in Vernon, Calif. The facility will rise three stories and will provide 32 megawatts of estimated IT power capacity when fully fitted-out. The data center is expected to be powered shell-available by the first half of 2026.

The facility is taking shape on 5.6 acres at 3094 E. Vernon Ave., within a 29-acre property that Goodman Group purchased in 2023. The project is developed in partnership with the city of Vernon and its Public Utilities Department.

The 250,000-square-foot data center will meet the growing demands of hyperscale and colocation users. The upcoming facility will have a low latency of 0.35 milliseconds round-trip time and feature a dual-feed power supply.

The site is nearly 4 miles from downtown Los Angeles and One Wilshire, the network connection hub servicing the West Coast. The location is also close to several service providers and fiber carriers.

Future expansion

The Australia-based Goodman Group owns and develops logistics and data center properties in key markets across Australia, Europe, Asia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the U.S. Since 2005, the company has expanded its data center capability and currently owns and operates a 5 gigawatt capacity power bank across 13 major international cities.

Part of the developer’s expansion in North America, Goodman LAX01 Vernon is also included in a new development program that seeks to add 500 megawatts of power across Northern U.S., Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Continental Europe. The program is slated to debut by June next year, according to Goodman Group CEO Greg Goodman said in prepared remarks.

Global hunger for more data centers

The data center sector is expected to continue its rapid growth in 2025, according to JLL’s Global Data Center Outlook. The power capacity is slated to grow 15 percent per year through 2027 worldwide, with the capacity in the Americas expanding to 30 gigawatts.

Despite the sector’s challenges, data center investment stays high. JLL predicts 2025 will be another record year for data center construction at a global level, with 10 gigawatts of power in projects expected to break ground.
