AECOM, Luis Vidal to Design Boston Airport Project

Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) has chosen global infrastructure firm AECOM and luis vidal + architects to handle the remodeling of Boston Logan International Airport’s Terminal E. The team won the design competition due to their collaborative proposal, which also satisfied Massport’s functional requirements.

The airport opened in 1923 and has six runways, handling 30 million passengers annually. The modernization program will comprise 400,000 square feet, as well as renovations of the terminal space. The winning proposal’s highlights include:

• enhanced ticketing and international arrivals
• new passenger security checkpoint
• airline clubs
• central multi-level great hall

Iconic Roof

The project features a distinctive roof with windows positioned according to the sun path, maximizing natural light inflow. Intuitive wayfinding and spacial clarity were also central aspects of the design, along with energy-efficiency. The development will aim for LEED Gold certification. AECOM is the main consultant architect and engineering company, while luis vidal is the vision architect.

“As one of the busiest airports in the U.S., Boston Logan will be prepared to meet customer expectation and demand well into the future,” said Terry Rookard, principal architect & senior vice president with AECOM architecture in Boston, in prepared remarks.

Once completed, the modernization plan will attract not only more passengers, but also new hospitality, retail, leisure and other businesses to the Boston airport area.
