Amazon to Open First Alabama Hub

Internet retail giant Amazon plans to extend its distribution network with a nearly $30 million investment in a 362,000-square-foot sortation center in Mobile, Ala. The Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with the Alabama Department of Commerce, Mobile County Commission and the City of Mobile to work on this project since early 2017. The new development is the result of a partnership between Amazon and Spartanburg, S.C.-based Johnson Development Associates. 

The Amazon center in west Mobile will be located on Trippel Road in the Port City Commerce Park, which is just off Interstate 10, at the interchange with Theodore-Dawes Road. The center will eventually employ approximately 360 part-time workers, but that number could rise by 1,000 people in busy periods of the year.  

“There are a lot of contributing factors that go into our thought process on where to place a new customer fulfillment or sortation center. Most importantly, we want to make sure our facilities are placed as close to the customer as possible,” said Amazon Strategic Communications Manager Ashley Robinson, in prepared remarks.

The facility will allow the company to accelerate deliveries of products purchased online. The site is expected to open later this year.
