Bay Area College Building Goes Green

McCarthy Building Cos. Inc.  recently contracted HGA Architects and Engineers as the design-build lead for a 50,000-square-foot Math, Science and Technology classroom and lab building at Cañada College in Redwood City, Calif. Construction of the sustainable three-story facility is scheduled to begin in spring of 2018.

The new building will feature flexible classrooms for science education, modern labs and faculty offices, indoor and outdoor learning commons with a plaza adjacent to the building. Located at 4200 Farm Hill Blvd., the Cañada College campus is just off Interstate 280.

The building will be designed to achieve LEED Gold certification and to be Net Zero Energy Ready, which means the building’s total annual energy consumption will be equal to or less than the amount of renewable energy created on the site. The project will also take part in the PG&E Savings by Design Program, which aims to help meet and exceed California’s Title 24 energy efficiency standards. “The sustainable design of the new facility will not only reduce the college’s operational costs, but will also provide a healthier environment overall,” said Kevin Day, design principal at HGA, in prepared remarks.

The HGA team also includes Principal in charge of the project Kaveh Amirdelfan, Project Manager Samara Lull, Project Designer David Lang, Project Architect Peter Kimelman and Project Coordinator Tiffany Coyne. Bill Niemann is the project director for McCarthy.
