U-Haul plans to open a modern full-service moving and self-storage business in a former Kmart building in Superior, Wis. The new 88,914-square-foot facility is scheduled to open in late fall.

The property, built in the 1980s, is located on a 6.2-acre lot at 3015 Tower Ave. and will provide 737 indoor climate-controlled and heated self-storage units that feature high-tech safety features. Currently, U-Haul Moving & Storage of Superior offers truck and trailer sharing, moving supplies and U-Box portable moving and storage containers out of a temporary showroom. The company’s project includes a new showroom and a professional hitch installation service.

“There hasn’t been climate-controlled and heated self-storage in Superior,” Bill Piette, president of U-Haul Co. of Northern Minnesota, said in a prepared statement. “We’re the first to the party and we’re excited to offer our quality U-Haul products and services to this deserving community.”

Support for the community

Piette announced at least six team members from Superior will be employed once the new location is fully operational, in an attempt to increase job growth within the community.

U-Haul acquired the vacant department store on May 11 as part of its corporate sustainability initiatives, which support infill developments meant to help local communities lower their carbon footprint.
