The U.S. economy lost 33,000 jobs in September, compared to the average monthly gain of 172,000 jobs over the last 12 months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The recent hurricanes are likely to blame for this reduction in payroll employment, which was largely felt in the food services and drinking places sector.
