Room & Board recently announced its plans to develop a new 250,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution center in Newton, N.C. with the help of The Keith Corp. The company intends to invest $12.9 million and employ at least 13 people by the end of 2020. A grant equal to 50 percent of the new property taxes generated for three years was approved by both the Catawba County Board of Commissioners and the Newton City Council for this project.

The facility will be built on a 41-acre site in the Newton Corporate Center on N.C. Highway 10 and in front of the Target distribution center. McCreary Modern, Lee Industries and Precedent are amongst the company’s Hickory, N.C.-area furniture suppliers. Room & Board has 15 stores across the United States, with new stores opening in 2017 in Portland, Ore., San Diego and Dallas. Founded in 1980, Room & Board sells artisan-made home furniture and accessories from showrooms around the country, with 90 percent of the furniture made in the U.S.

“Furniture has been a backbone of Catawba County’s economy since its beginning, and it is not surprising that Room & Board would want to be close to their partners and the strong furniture cluster here,” said Catawba County Commission Chair Randy Isenhower.

Catawba County will also benefit from other investments such as GKN Driveline’s expansion at its five facilities in North Carolina.
