GE Healthcare Life Sciences Debuts Suburban Boston HQ

GE Healthcare Life Sciences new office in Marlborough, Mass.

Boston—GE Healthcare’s Life Sciences business debuts its new North American headquarters with the opening of a state-of-the-art, 210,000-square-foot space in Marlborough, Mass. The suburban Boston office digs, which include 40,000 square feet for laboratory uses, will ultimately house 500 scientists and professionals.

The address is 100 Results Way (or 200 Forest St.), a 540,000-square-foot property redeveloped by Atlantic Management Corp. on the site of the former Hewlett Packard campus. The lab segment of GE Life Sciences’ new site will accommodate its ninth global Fast Track facility, which is utilized for working with and training biotech innovators, as well as its FlexFactory manufacturing platform.

Architectural firm Symmes Maini & McKee Associates designed GE Life Sciences’ new home, creating a series of neighborhoods with collaborative meeting spaces sprinkled throughout, and such special features as a tour route that allows visitors and employees a peek into non-secure labs.

It was in 2014 when GE Healthcare announced that the Life Sciences division would be pulling up stakes from addresses in Piscataway and Princeton, N.J., to head for Massachusetts’ fertile life sciences pastures. “Having our North American headquarters in the heart of Massachusetts’ rich ecosystem of healthcare, pharma, and biotech brings us closer to key customers, outstanding talent and ground-breaking innovation and is already helping fuel further growth for our business,” Kieran Murphy, president & CEO of GE Healthcare’s Life Sciences business, said in a prepared statement. Parent company General Electric is feeling the pull as well; the Fairfield, Conn.-based conglomerate acquired a site for its new headquarters in Boston’s Seaport District in March of this year.

The Greater Boston Area continues to hold the position of the top life sciences hub in the country, with Cambridge leading the way—but clearly, there’s something about Marlborough. Over the last couple of years, more than a few life sciences/biotech businesses have chosen to make the city their home base, including healthcare and diagnostics company Hologic and New England Cryogenic Center, both of which announced relocations to Marlborough in 2015.
