GM Plans $334M Upgrade of Upstate NY Plants
The Detroit-based company intends to expand and modernize three of its facilities.

New York—General Motors recently announced its plans to invest $334 million in new machinery and equipment at its assembly plants in Tonawanda, Lockport and Rochester, New York. The machinery and supplies will be used to produce future engine and component products. This investment process will allow the company to retain 1,200 existing jobs. The upgrade is expected to be complete by December 2018.

GM will spend about $296 million on equipment for future engine production at the 1937-built Tonawanda Engine plant. The company also plans to create 67 additional jobs. At the Rochester Components Holdings plant, roughly $6 million will be invested in powertrain components, while nearly $32 million will go into the Lockport factory for future cooling, heating, air conditioning and ventilation components.
“GM remains committed to investing in its U.S. operations. With these latest projects we have announced investments of $2.2 billion in 2016, allowing us to support the production of future engines and vehicles,” said Cathy Clegg, vice president at GMNA manufacturing and labor relations, in prepared remarks.
As an incentive, the state will provide up to $7 million in capital grants and tax credits in return for job and investment commitments. GM will be able to maintain 4,200 total manufacturing jobs in the state of New York.
