Honda of Downtown Los Angeles broke ground on a $30 million project slated for completion in the summer of 2018, when the car dealer will relocate from its current location at 1540 S Figueroa St. The company is contributing to the revival of South Los Angeles, where other high-profile developments are in the pipeline, including the $350 million Bank of California Stadium, the $700 million USC Village and the $1 billion Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

Located at 740 W. Martin Luther King Blvd., just off Interstate 110, the five-story facility will feature indoor and rooftop parking, a new car showroom, business offices and administrative areas as well as a spacious customer lounge. The top three floors will be operations and inventory areas. The green design of the 210,000-square-foot dealership will include exterior screens with natural cooling and rooftop solar panels. The building’s futuristic exterior will feature 10,000 square feet of perforated aluminum panels that absorb reflected light and two large video screens to broadcast ads and community events. Commercial Development Resources was in charge of the conceptual site, utility and grading plan development.

The property will provide 100 additional jobs. Honda also plans to donate $100,000 to the Los Angeles Trade-Tech Community College to stimulate education in the automotive service-tech fields and an additional $50,000 directly to the new business improvement district for the development of the south Figueroa corridor.

“This project aligns with three key priorities for my district – economic development, job creation and neighborhood revitalization,” said Councilman Curren Price Jr. in prepared remarks. “The facility is being constructed on a previously vacant lot that was dark and uninviting and will greatly improve the streetscape of this part of the neighborhood.”

With more than 500 new and used vehicles sold per month, Honda of Downtown Los Angeles is now one of the top ten highest volume Honda dealers in North America.
