Last week, Sagamore Development Company and the City of Baltimore celebrated the groundbreaking for a new luxury hotel on the historic Fells Point waterfront. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Kevin Plank, founder of Sagamore and CEO of Under Armour, attended the ceremony together with many other elected officials.

The Baltimore Business Journal recently reported that Sagamore purchased the property at 1715 Thames Street last June, for $3.4 million. It was originally built in 1914, and served as a commercial pier. Sagamore will now invest $60 million to turn the century-old property into a hotel. Plank told the Baltimore Business Journal that the project is part of Under Armour’s strategy to provide its guests with an unique Baltimore experience.

The new Recreation Pier Hotel is scheduled to open in late 2016. It will be a world-class luxury hotel, with 116,000 square feet of space and 128 rooms. Recreation Pier will also include a two-story lobby lounge, a whiskey bar, a restaurant, a pool and a grand ballroom with space for as many as 230 people.

Mayor Rawlings-Blake called the project an important development for Baltimore. She said that it will not only transform the historic and long-vacant property into a new hotel, but it will also create jobs, expand the tax base and help cultivate Baltimore’s reputation as a world-class city.
