New Hotel Headed for Downtown Miami

Dutch hotel chain citizenM plans to open a 348-key, 128,000-square-foot property at Miami Worldcenter, a new, 27-acre mixed-use development underway in Downtown Miami. Gensler Architects is handling design.

Located along Second Avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets, the new hotel will be situated next to Miami Worldcenter’s pedestrian-only, open-air shopping promenade, which will offer a host of leading retail, dining, and entertainment options.

When completed, the 12-story hotel is set to feature a state-of-the-art fitness center, as well as a sun deck with a swimming pool and rooftop bar on the 10^th floor offering views of Biscayne Bay and the downtown Miami skyline. The property is also slated to contain 1,850 square feet of the brand’s signature society creative spaces and meeting rooms.

“citizenM’s rollout strategy has always centered around following our guests—a group of modern travelers who frequent true live/work/play destinations within the world’s gateway cities,” Ernest Lee, citizenM managing director of development & investment in the U.S., said in a prepared statement.

Transformative development

The $2 billion Miami Worldcenter is expected to transform the city’s urban landscape. The development will span 10 blocks, with construction on the first phase of the project already underway. Phase One consists of a 60-story Paramount luxury condominium building, a 444-unit CAOBA Class A apartment tower, and high-street retail.

“We set out to create an economic driver and international destination, Miami Worldcenter, in the heart of Downtown Miami as well as a vibrant neighborhood that will draw locals and visitors alike,” Nitin Motwani, Miami Worldcenter Associates’ managing principal, said. “Welcoming citizenM to Miami Worldcenter expands our reach in being able to offer an affordable yet luxuriously designed hotel within our ‘city within a city.’”

Netherlands-based citizenM operates hotels in Paris, Copenhagen, London, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Glasgow and is developing numerous properties across the U.S., including in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. It also has two other hotels in the works in South Florida. In June, the company proposed a 20-story, 252-key property in Miami’s Brickell Financial District. Last October, it signed on to operate a 168-key asset in Miami Beach.

In December, citizenM Bowery Hotel in Manhattan topped off. The 300-key building is being constructed with pre-engineered modular units made in Poland and assembled at the site.
