Turner Tapped for $300M Replacement Hospital in San Jose, Calif.

Officials in Santa Clara County, Calif., have selected Turner Construction Company to manage construction of a $300 million replacement hospital for Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System in the city of San Jose.

Construction on the 375,000 square-foot project is slated to begin this summer with completion scheduled for 2012. The 168-bed tower will serve as an adult and pediatric trauma center specializing in burn, traumatic brain and spinal injuries and will include a rehabilitation therapy center, aquatic therapy pools, support offices and a pharmacy.

The facility is being built to achieve LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, with environmentally friendly features such as an enhanced exterior wall system to minimize heat loss and gain, low volatile organic compound building materials, three green roof areas, and exterior lighting to reduce nighttime light pollution.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center serves a quarter of Santa Clara County residents with eight health centers across the county. It is the city of San Jose’s only nationally recognized pediatric trauma center and one of only two burn trauma centers north of Los Angeles. Its burn center served an estimated 250 patients in 2009.

“We are proud to continue our long standing relationship with Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with the construction of this important healthcare facility to benefit the patients served by the campus and to further the Medical Center’s goals of providing world-class treatment to Santa Clara County and the surrounding communities,” Kevin Antonelli, vice president and general manager of Turner’s San Jose operations, said when announcing the news.

A major U.S. general builder, Turner completed $8.2 billion of construction in 2009.
