U-Haul Plans Full-Service Self-Storage Store in Tippercanoe County

Lafayette, Ind.–U-Haul has acquired a property at 3861 South St. in Lafayette, with plans to turn the facility into a full-service store offering indoor climate-controlled storage units, hitch installation and U-Box warehouse.

Plans are still being formulated for U-Haul Moving & Storage of South Street, which will be developed in phases.

According to Anthony Jones, president of U-Haul Co. of Central Indiana, his team has been serving do-it-yourself moving customers at the property since July. Truck and trailer rentals, moving supplies and additional products are currently available at the location, a former Wal-Mart site.

“I know the community is excited about us being here,” Jones said in prepared remarks. “This is going to be a Grade A facility. Customers here haven’t had a full-service store near West Lafayette, and now we have the opportunity to serve them in their community.”

The 122,989-square-foot facility sits on 12 acres and is part of a shopping plaza that houses five other tenants, including a hair and nail salon and a dental office. According to Jones, U-Haul intends to maintain its existing tenants and expand around them.

The new location fills the void left by the closing of the U-Haul store at 301 Sagamore Pkwy. S., which ceased operations earlier in February.

“This is a big college town, and we needed to be able to offer the service of self-storage,” explained Bill Rains, U-Haul area district vice president.

Jones said that his location will be the moving and storage hub for Purdue University. The store is four miles east of campus and a few blocks west of Interstate 65 at exit 172.

There are four other U-Haul neighborhood dealers in Lafayette and West Lafayette that serve do-it-yourself movers: Spurlock Ent. Inc. (601 Farabee Drive); Dark Horse Logistics (3131 Newcastle Road); Arrows III Adventures Inc. (2888 State Road 25 N.); and Wabash Valley Feed & Western Wear (2781 Klondike Road).

The acquisition of the South Street location was driven by U-Haul Co.’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives. Through this program, U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint by readapting existing buildings while reducing their unwanted inventory of unused facilities.
