UVA Hospital Overhauls Charlottesville Campus
Skanska USA is in charge of the $142 million renovation and expansion, which is scheduled for completion in 2020.

The University of Virginia’s hospital expansion project in Charlottesville, Va.
Charlottesville, VA—Skanska USA has been selected to expand and renovate University Hospital, a 645-bed medical center situated on the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville.
The $142 million, multi-phase project is scheduled for completion in December 2020. According to the developer, early site preparations, utility relocations and work on the building foundation system began in June 2015. The current phase of construction is expected to be completed in fall 2017.
Located at 1215 Lee St., the hospital is part of the University of Virginia Health System, which also includes a school of medicine, a school of nursing, and a health sciences library. The medical building designed by architect Paul J. Pelz opened in 1901 with 25 beds and three operating rooms and expanded throughout the years.
Under current expansion plans designed by architecture firm Perkins + Will, Skanska will build a 15-story tower right next to the existing hospital, on an underutilized site that once served as a helipad. The 430,000-square-foot expansion will include a new emergency department, new surgical suites on the second level, an inpatient section that will occupy six levels, and expanded ancillary services. The tower is scheduled for completion in fall 2019.
Skanska will also renovate approximately 90,000 square feet of space in the existing hospital buildings, including new drop-off and entrance locations for the emergency department. Three MRIs currently located in the annex that is on the site of the planned expansion will be relocated to the first level of the existing building.
