Vantage Data Centers is expanding into Canada by acquiring 4Degrees Colocation from Videotron Ltd., a Quebecor Media Inc. subsidiary, for approximately US$200 million, or about C$259 million.
The planned deal will add existing data centers in Montreal and Quebec City, which will bring Vantage’s total number of operating facilities to nine and data centers under development to four. The transaction, which is expected to close within the coming weeks, will enable Vantage to have its first facilities in the two rapidly growing Canadian markets.
“Based on extensive dialogue with our customers, Vantage identified Montreal and Quebec City as highly attractive markets due to low power costs, tax incentives and excellent fiber connectivity,” Sureel Choksi, Vantage president & CEO, said in a prepared statement. “The 4Degrees acquisition will accelerate our expansion into these markets, enabling Vantage to better serve hyperscale, cloud and enterprise customers across five strategic geographies.”
After serving as general manager of 4Degrees Colocation for the past four years, Maxim Guevin will become vice president and general manager of Vantage Canada. He is an experienced leader in the construction, sales and management of data centers.
More expansions ahead
In the U.S., Vantage has data centers in Santa Clara and Quincy, Wash., and is building a $1 billion, 142MW campus in Ashburn, Va. When completed, the Northern Virginia campus will encompass 720,000 square feet of data center space across five buildings. The company is planning to include sustainable features such as EV charging stations and on-site solar and wind energy sources, the first of this kind in Northern Virginia.
Vantage, which was acquired by Digital Bridge Holdings in March 2017 for $1.2 billion, completed a new Santa Clara facility in October 2017 on its 18-acre campus in Silicon Valley. The V6 added 9MW of new data center capacity to the 51MW offered at the site. The company is also expanding its second Santa Clara campus, where data centers in three buildings will offer 69MW of critical IT load when completed.
